Norimichi Hirakawa, a leading representative of a young generation of Japanese digital artists, uses his art to explore and pervade the boundaries between art and science. Influenced by his background in the disciplines of mathematics and physics, the artist creates generative video installations and framed works from complex algorithmic processes and digital coding. He thus generates a large variety of audiovisual, mathematical, and abstract data which describe theoretical or existing phenomena. Hirakawa not only confronts art with digital tooling and scientific imagination, he also places the spectator in a poise between his artworks' powerful aesthetic and their underlying rational logic.
Norimichi Hirakawa completed his studies at the Art & Media Course Department of Information Design at the renowned Tama Art University in Tokyo, Japan, where especially the interdisciplinary exchange with sciences like mathematics, physics, and computer sciences had an impact on his work, not only in terms of technique but also subject matter - visible in his long-term dedication to phenomena of astrophysics, for instance. Besides numerous international exhibitions of his work, Hirakawa was awarded the Excellence Prize of the Japan Media Art Festival (2004) and the Award of Distinction for Interactive Art of teh Prix Ars Electronica (2008).
